We have a runner!
Fear loves to start stampedes. Animals can easily “spook” and set off a stampede. Their anxious frenzy sends all the others into total hysteria over a small, often unfounded, incident that’s thrown out of proportion by PANIC!
Have you ever had a thought stampede? One small thought spooks you into running swiftly down a track of despair? We also call this the snowball effect. One runaway thought collects others in its breakneck downhill demise.
Your boss simply asks to meet with you and your mind runs to the unemployment line. You hear a faint noise and your mind races to a terrorist invasion. A hang nail becomes open heart surgery in a matter of 30 seconds. These are all examples of runaway thoughts.
Panic paralyzes or causes frenzy. Our English word “panic,” originates with tales of the mythical Greek creature, Pan. Normally, a pleasant and peaceful fellow, Pan played his pipe and frolicked through the woods. But if accidentally awakened from his noon nap, his temper would rage and cause the woodland animals to stampede with frenzy. Greek authors derived the word panikon, “sudden fear,” from Pan’s unanticipated anxious indignation, and this is the ultimate source of the English word panic.
We know it’s not logical to be scared or uneasy in our mind, but our emotions don’t agree. Has panic ever seized you and caused mass terror? This fear is not a gift from God! The book of James tells us how every good and perfect gift comes from the Father. (James 1:7) Panic is not perfect. It’s author is not your Father or friend.
The enemy is trying to scare you out of your destiny!
Paul mentored his young protégé Timothy by saying, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) If God did not give it to us, then we don’t want it! Paul said this during one of the most tumultuous times in history when Nero was beheading and burning Christians. Paul encouraged Timothy that God has not given us a spirit of panic and phobia, but POWER and a DISCIPLINED MIND–even in the worst intimidating circumstances.
Has panic ever caused your mind to runaway into places it does NOT belong? Maybe you’ve heard your spirit whisper…”Don’t go there! You know where this line of thinking ends and it’s not pretty!” It’s time to start making your mind obey your spirit, led by the Holy Spirit.
Be Still & Know
There are dangerous thought tracks in our mind that need to be boarded up and denied entry, just like an old mine shaft with tracks that drop off into oblivion. Panic produces runaway mind tracks that lead to destructive behaviors. We have the power in Christ to tell them to STOP and be STILL & KNOW God.
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (underline added)
When FEAR comes to bully you and “spook” your thoughts into a stampede–your SPIRIT can stand up and say…NO THOUGHTS, WE ARE NOT RUNNING THERE!
Fear thoughts are displaced only when REPLACED with love thoughts. You can tell yourself all day “don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid,” but until you REPLACE the fear with LOVE there’s no track for your mind to run on.
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18
Can you recognize any of those deep, dark tunnels or dead ends that need to be boarded up and NEVER allowed entry again?
Next time FEAR triggers panic in your mind, don’t allow your thoughts to start a stampede that drive you crazy.
The Holy Spirit has given us POWER to overcome PANIC. By trusting in God’s love, we can calm those fear thoughts with a disciplined mind that’s able to be still–and not make a run for it!
- Do you know what triggers your runaway thoughts into stampedes?
- How does fear or panic threaten your mind? What is the lie? What is God’s truth?
- How can you board up those thought tracks, so that you never run down them again?
- Are you ready to stand up and be the boss of our mind? Start telling it where it’s boundaries are.
- Do you say things like, “I’m losing my mind! I’m going crazy!” Displace those negative confessions with true statements like, “Peace guards my mind. I have a sound mind through Christ’s power.”
Day 10. For God did not give us a spirit of fear but a spirit of power of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7
Prayer: God has not given me a spirit of fear. It’s not my good and perfect gift from Him, and I won’t continue to live with crazy, runaway thoughts. I take authority in Jesus name over every spirit of fear and anxiety making me think I’m crazy and losing my mind. Right now, Jesus, board up every non-productive, dead end, destructive track in my mind, and empower me to NEVER cross over them again! I declare I have a sound, disciplined and calm mind. I will be STILL and KNOW you are God. Be exalted in every thought and every action of my life.
Big Thought: We have power in Christ to have a sound mind.
