Is your mind set?
We know how to SET the thermostat to cool the house in the Texas heat.
We know how to SET the GPS for our road trip destination.
We know how to SET the oven temperature to cook the brownies.
We recently watched the Rio olympic volleyball teams SET the ball for the killer spike.
We can SET a date for the big event.
We SET the alarm clock for the next day.
Why is it so hard to SET our minds?
As a society we are busier with more potential distractions than ever before. We’re dinged with notifications, we’re buzzed with texts, we’re targeted by marketers, we’re lobbied for votes, and hustled by unsolicited emails.
Just as we focus our thoughts to God’s calling and commit to follow through with serving our neighbor, loving our spouse and staying positive–SQUIRREL! (You know this inside joke if you’ve seen the adorable movie, Up! Dug, the yellow dog is wholeheartedly committed to the adventure, until…you guessed it, he sees a squirrel and then all attention is diverted and the mission is abandoned.)
What God adventures have you abandoned because of squirrels?
Distraction: a thing that prevents someone from giving full attention to something else, extreme agitation of the mind or emotions.
The word “distraction” comes from the French word related to a cruel form of torture reserved for the worst criminals. The offender had their limbs tied to four horses and were literally “pulled in all directions” until they were pulled apart, and “dis-tracted”.
Colossians 3 encourages us to SET our minds towards heavenly not earthly things.
SET: (phronéō in Greek) “set your affection” to direct one’s mind to a thing, to seek, to strive for / to be of the same mind i.e. agreed together, cherish the same views, be harmonious / to be of one’s party, side with him – Strong’s Concordance
I love this definition. We see the essence of the Greek word “set our affections” by how our thoughts are called to be “in harmony with heaven” and “cherishing the same views.” As Jesus instructed us to pray, “Our Father who are in heaven…your kingdom come your will be done on earth AS IN HEAVEN.” We are praying for HEAVEN’S realities to SET our minds in sync with God’s eternal perspective, not this earth’s temporary feelings.
Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective…Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life—even though invisible to spectators—is with Christ in God. He is your life. Colossians 3: 2-4 Message
This is a Marvelous Day!
The best way to SET our mind is by giving the FIRST THOUGHTS every morning to the Lord. Whether you’re a morning person or not (I’m not…at all! That’s why I desperately need truth and coffee first thing!)
I love the First5 devotional app. The Bible app, has many wonderful quick reading plans to SET the DEFAULT of your thinking back to heaven. Our “mindset” becomes SET on God’s truth instead of the squirrels vying to steal our attention.
Mindset = n. A fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person’s responses to and interpretations of situations. An inclination or a habit.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could SET our MIND to a predetermined favorable response?
Years ago we started a family morning routine to SET our mindset in agreement with God’s will. Every morning on the way to school, we would ask our kids to declare with us…
“This is a GREAT day! This is a MARVELOUS day! This is the day the Lord has made I will REJOICE and be glad in it!” (Psalm 118: 24)
(Ok, I’ll be honest. The kids weren’t always enthusiastic and sometimes slightly annoyed and comatose as they prayed, but the mind / mouth connection is powerful! Now as adulthoods they continue this beloved family practice.)
This is the DEFAULT address we SET for our mind’s destination. It will be a marvelous day because God made it and we’re here breathing it! Everyday holds divine appointments and connections poured out from heaven to earth. Everyday has seeds to sow for this strategic season.
When distractions try to lure thoughts with jealousy, anger, insecurity or stress; switch back to the default SET earlier. Tell yourself, “No, I’m not going to chase the squirrels of bitterness, shame, or regret. My mind is SET on something greater!
Something good is going to happen today. SET your mind in agreement with heaven’s agenda.
- I have learned not to trust my memory or to underestimate my propensity toward losing focus. As soon as God gives me a creative word, idea or word for someone else, I write it down or put it in my phone notes. As you’re a good steward with the thoughts God gives you , he’ll multiply them.
- What are your number one distractions that pull at your mind?
- What are some ways you can SET your mind first thing in the morning?
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory…And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him. Colossians 3:2-4 & 10
Prayer: Lord, today I set my mind on you. I pray you would default my mindset to be in harmony and agreement with heaven. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven for my life. This is a great day! This is a marvelous day! This is the day the Lord has made and I will rejoice and be glad in it. Holy Spirit, set a guard on my mind that I will not be pulled by distractions and run in circles. Thank you for divine appointments and heaven’s connections for my life. Help me stay focused on the adventures you have destined for me today and not be distracted by the squirrels!
Big Thought: I will SET my mind on heaven and not be pulled by distracting thoughts.
